Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis A Critical Overview

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Critical Overview

Understanding ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive and fatal neurological disorder that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain.

Impact and Symptoms

ALS gradually weakens muscles, causing difficulty with movement, speaking, swallowing, and breathing. As the disease progresses, individuals may lose the ability to walk, perform everyday tasks, and communicate effectively.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of ALS is still unknown, but genetic factors, environmental influences, and age seem to play a role. Individuals with a family history of ALS have an increased risk of developing the disease.
